The decision for a netbook is a decision against a large HDD and a DVD drive. A decision you will not regret in more than 90 percent of the netbook’s use. But the day will come when you will prefer to be out there with a complete little workstation.

Here comes  the Netbook Extension Tablet, a clever new ICY BOX, into play. It looks like a cool netbook itself, shiny black and slim. Inside there is space for a 2.5” SATA HDD and a CD/DVD drive. A mini USB interface connects them with the outside world, which is the netbook. The size of 9” is   ideal.  The netbook is simply placed on top of the Netbook Extension Tablet.

The Netbook Extension Tablet comes in two versions. In any case you have to insert an HDD of your own. With the DVD drive you have a choice. Either you want to build in your own DVD drive (version IB-DK210) or you want to have it built in (version IB-DK210-OD).

The ICY BOX has a 40 mm fan. In its basic position the fan pushes the air along the drives to the outside. Or you flap it upwards. Then it moves the air through the gap between netbook and ICY BOX. Thus the two of them keep cool. Cool.

It takes in one hard drive disk (up to 1 TB). The configuration within the network is easily done via a web interface by a browser like Internet Explorer, Firefox or Opera.

First the ICY BOX IB-NAS4210 proves its superior intelligence by versatility. With server functions which fulfill nearly every need. Thanks to Samba the IB-NAS4210 becomes the server within Windows or Mac networks. For Unix or Linux there is NFS.

Access from any place in the world is made possible by the FTP server. DHCP handles the network configuration automatically. The print server gives every user in the network access to the printer. For multi-media tasks the IB-NAS4210 has UP'n'P AV – a 30 days test version of the TwonkyMedia media server is included – and iTunes® support. Have you counted? A BitTorrent® client does not only delight movie enthusiasts. You can choose from four file systems: EXT2, EXT3, FAT32 and NTFS. With NTFS you can connect the NAS with USB to the network. An HDD encryption using 128 AES is possible. If the EXT3 file system is used, a quota can limit the disk space for every user. One-Touch Backup saves data from an external disk or USB stick by simply pressing a button. Data-transfer rates up to 30 MBytes/sec are possible, depending on the individual network.

With its built-in intelligence the IB-NAS4210 is almost a little computer. Compared to usual computers or servers it consumes much less power, thus saves money and gives the environment a break. You can download movie files (BitTorrent® client!) without a computer activated.

ICY BOX IB-MP308 is an advanced HDD network media player.  It is the nerve centre of the media you operate. It plays video, music and pictures via output equipment like TV set, home cinema equipment or stereo. It is capable to deliver Full High Definition – 1920 x 1080 p – TV and video output. It commands all usual video and audio formats and many less usual as well.

The ICY BOX IB-MP308 is designed for users who are familiar with local area networks (LANs) as well as for users who have only vague or no knowledge of LANs.

Should you have burnt your fingers the secret partition is also accessible with a password. The transport package of the S225-1S-B2
serves as a stand for it and it accommodates to the USB cable. That’s the safe way.

Aren’t hard disks the libraries of our time, of the digital age?
With some distinctions. Those usually look less impressive and you can’t carry them with you.

The IB-285 is a portable enclosure for a 2.5” SATA hard disk drive. It has the size of a pocket diary.
The light metal case inside the soft leatherette coating is a solid protection for the HDD.
The buckle turns out to be holding the USB plug. So the speed advantage of USB is not affected by
the search for a cable.

During this new contruction the SATA HDD´s can be pushed directly into the frame.

The change of the HDD is much more faster and easier also for laymen probably hardly

People always seem to get nostalgic over the "good ole days" of personal computing, the less nostalgic of us however can't quite understand why. Days spent getting a game to work, then days more trying to get the sound to work.
Programs supplied on a dozen floppy disks. 300MB hard disks and 14" CRT screens with a curve like a soup bowl. Nope, I'm afraid that looking back does nothing for me but make me cringe.

PC users today (you knew it was coming) have never had it so good. Yes, I'm starting to sound like my grandfather, but at least there are enough PC users from my generation around to back up my assertions. Everything is cheaper, faster, smarter and, as a rule, half the size it was, well, apart from monitors anyway.

When I was saving to get myself a monstrously large 5.25" Seagate ST-225 way back when, I'd have suggested intensive psychiatric therapy for anyone foolish enough to suggest that one day I'd be storing 100GB of data on a 2.5" hard drive that's just 9mm deep. Strangely nobody ever did suggest that, at least not in quite so much detail.

The great thing about all this miniaturisation is that it opens up all kind of new possibilities, and in a world that seems to create important data just for the fun of it (what do we need it all for anyway?), data storage, backup and retrieval is suddenly critical.

In RAID o operating mode the data is written/read in stripes alternately on both drives.
This sums the disk volumes and increases the speed of these operations. If one of the drives fails all data is lost. The RAID 1 operating mode mirrors all data simultaneously identically on both disks. The total capacity then is limited to the smaller one of both disks. If one disk fails the otherone takes over and  all data is kept save. If a virus or human error destroys a file this file is lost because all changes take place
on both disks.

The Stardom U6-2 of the SOHOTANK series puts two IDE/SATA HDDs in use without restriction of capacity for JBOD or RAID 0.The connection to the PC is made by FireWire A (1x) and FireWire B (2x) interfaces.

By using a switch on the back you can choose between RAID 0 and JBOD. By using RAID 0 with installed hard disks you can combined them to one large drive; with JBOB the system identify 2 undependend drives. Even 2 different sized hard disks can be used with RAID 0.
